Study Away Need-Based Scholarship
Furman Study Away Scholarships are need-based awards intended to aid students who otherwise would not be able to engage in the study away experience. These are partial scholarships but in no case will they subsidize a student's entire study away program.
The David and Leighan Rinker, Bony Hampton Peace, George I. Alden, Class of 1985, Walter J. Heacock, and the Rinker Center for Study Away and International Education Scholarships are awarded each year according to the criteria listed below:
Acceptance and paid deposit to a Furman faculty-led study away or exchange program.
Submission of the scholarship application.
If a student is awarded a second study away scholarship during his/her time at Furman, the second scholarship will cover a lower percentage of the program costs than the first scholarship.
Students are not eligible to receive more than two study away scholarships.
Furman students who intend to participate in a Furman faculty-led study away program (semester, May Experience, summer) or in a Furman exchange program (semester, year-long) or affiliate program (semester) are eligible to apply. Participants in non-Furman study away programs are not eligible for these scholarships.
Students who currently receive need-based financial aid or who may be eligible for such need are encouraged to apply for a study away scholarship. Financial need is determined primarily by the student's current FAFSA form, on file with Furman's financial aid office. Students who intend to apply for a Study Away Scholarship should file the FAFSA form, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, by March 15 of the academic year prior to applying for a Study Away Scholarship. To explain any financial contingencies that are not reflected on the FAFSA, students may provide additional information when prompted in the application.
When to Apply:
Apply for a study away scholarship by the same deadline your study away application for any eligible study away program is due. Do not wait until you have been accepted into a study away program to submit a scholarship application. If you have submitted your scholarship application by the deadline, every effort will be made to review your scholarship application and notify you of your eligibility for this scholarship prior to the deposit deadline for your program so that you can factor this into your decision
Timing of Scholarships:
Study Away Scholarships will only be awarded to students once they have been accepted and their participation is confirmed for an eligible study away program. The scholarship will display as a credit on the student's bill and will reduce the balance remaining on the program after bills are generated. Please note that the scholarship cannot be used to cover the study away program deposit and interim payment. Students should plan accordingly.
