Study Away Scholarships

Furman Study Away Scholarships are need-based awards intended to aid students who otherwise would not be able to engage in the study away experience. These are partial scholarships but in no case will they subsidize a student's entire study away program.

The David and Leighan Rinker, Bony Hampton Peace, George I. Alden, Class of 1985, Walter J. Heacock, and the Rinker Center for Study Away and International Education Scholarships are awarded each year according to the criteria listed below:
  1. Acceptance and paid deposit to a Furman faculty-led study away or exchange program.
  2. Financial need.
  3. Academic performance.
  4. Compelling rationale for study away, as demonstrated through a personal essay.
  5. Submission of the scholarship application by the application deadline.

Eligible Programs:

Furman students who intend to participate in a Furman faculty-led study away program, for a semester, May Experience, Washington Experience Summer Program, or a Furman semester or year-long exchange program are eligible to apply.  Participants in Furman affiliate and non-Furman study away programs are not eligible for these scholarships.

Financial Need:

Students who currently recieve need-based financial aid or who may be eligible for such need are encouraged to apply for a study away scholarship. Financial need is determined primarily by the student's current FAFSA form, on file with Furman's financial aid office. Students who intend to apply for a Study Away Scholarship should file the FAFSA form, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, by March 15 of the academic year prior to applying for a Study Away Scholarship. To explain any financial contingencies that are not reflected on the FAFSA, students may provide additional information when prompted in the application.

When to Apply:

You may apply for a study away scholarship after submitting a study away application for any eligible study away program and before the application deadline.  Due to overlapping deadlines, you should not wait until you have been accepted into a study away program to submit a scholarship application.

If your participation in a study away program is contingent on receiving a scholarship and you have submitted your scholarship application by the deadline, every effort will be made to review your scholarship application and notify you of your eligibilty for this aid prior to the deposit deadline for your program so that you can factor this into your decision

Study Away Scholarships will only be awarded to students once they have been accepted and their participation is confirmed for an eligible study away program.
