NEWCASTLE Australia

The Ultimate Study Abroad Experience

Very few places on Earth boast such perfect positioning along the coast. As the only city in Australia with its Central Business District situated both on the beach and the harbor waterfront, Newcastle features a cosmopolitan vibe along some of the continent’s most sought-after real estate. Surfers from around the world regularly descend upon its beaches to participate in one of the world’s top surfing competitions and even for those who don’t know a “barrel” from a “curl,” Newcastle is a laidback paradise for beach-goers. Besides boasting a favorable climate, the city offers students a vibrant nightlife, keeping you active day and night! Take some time to soak in your surroundings with a trip to the lookout at Bar Beach, the city’s highest point and a mecca for hang gliders.

"I would describe my experience abroad in two words: life changing. My experience was so amazing that I now want to come back to Australia and live there for a few years. It was everything I hoped for and more. I believe that the TEAN experience is different from all others because of how it was structured. Everything about TEAN was professional, yet personal at the same time. I think that TEAN students come back with more cultural awareness and different world views because of the cultural events that TEAN holds. TEAN encourages their students to travel and experience different things. Remember it's not weird it's just different."

Furman Financial Aid

Furman students are eligible to apply Federal and State Aid and Institutional Scholarships towards the cost of the program and must complete a Consortium Agreement in order to have their aid applied toward the semester cost of the study abroad program.

Furman's Application Process

Submit a study away application to Furman University by Furman’s application deadline. Applicants will meet with a representative from the Study Away office for an interview. Students for whom the program is a good fit will be accepted and pre-approved to apply directly to the program. Furman will send the affiliate program a list of names of students who are pre-approved. Once accepted by Furman, students will apply directly to the affiliate program.

Once accepted by the affiliate program, students must submit a Transfer Credit Authorization Form to the Registrar at Furman in order to be pre-approved to receive credit for classes taken abroad.  Please contact the Registrar at Furman if you have questions related to the form.

Furman Billing

To commit to a program, students will pay a $500 non-refundable deposit to Furman within 2 weeks of acceptance. This deposit is put toward the total cost of the program. Furman will bill students for Furman’s tuition, room, and board, plus a $250 administrative fee approximately two months before the program starts.
